About JMEIL

While numerous academic journals exist relating to the Middle East broadly, with a few even focusing on Middle Eastern and Islamic law, their contributors and audience primarily come from social science and humanities disciplines. In developing the idea of the Berkeley Journal of Middle Eastern & Islamic Law (JMEIL), students recognize the lack of space within American legal academia devoted to scholarly legal research relating to the Islamic world and the Middle East. The journal seeks to fill this void, serving as a resource for academics, jurists, practitioners, students, and others interested in Islamic and Middle Eastern law and policy. JMEIL will publish annually each Spring, having published its first edition in May 2008.

JMEIL is also committed to fostering discourse on issues relating to Middle Eastern and Islamic law through the sponsoring of colloquia and speakers and by working with Berkeley faculty to establish a structured program of research in Islamic law.

**JMEIL is cited as: Berkeley J. Mid. E. & Islamic L.**

Joining JMEIL

Why Join?

Working on JMEIL offers students a unique opportunity to be involved in the production of high level legal scholarship while learning about current issues in Islamic and Middle Eastern Law. Students can expect to gain significant experience and important writing and legal practice skills such as Bluebook usage, substantive editing, and technical editing (grammar, punctuation, etc.).

Journal membership is a highly-valued experience for legal employers of all sorts, and a virtual requirement for federal judicial clerkships. Being a member of any journal, and JMEIL especially, gives new Boalt students an opportunity to meet, bond with, and learn from second and third-year law students in the Boalt community.

Membership Requirements

The Berkeley Journal of Middle Eastern & Islamic Law is open to all currently enrolled students of the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. However, the Board of Editors has discretion to offer membership to undergraduate and graduate UC Berkeley students outside of the law school.

To join JMEIL, a prospective member must; 1) be an enrolled UC Berkeley student, 2) undertake a certain set hourly requirement, 3) pay annual membership dues, and 4) attend general meetings. Since JMEIL is still a nascent journal, there will be plentiful opportunities to work on articles, activities, and other journal-related matters, which will allow you to have a sense of ownership and pride in the creation of one of Berkeley’s newest law journals.
